Prime Movers - Matters of Time 6-song EP (Throbbing Lobster #3) Winter '84-85. The 'Movers were
Battle of the Garages stars who were managed by Joyce Linehan who was working for Throbbing Lobster at the time - she also handled the Smithereens, Plan 9 and the Lemonheads. The Prime Movers were sloppygreat garage raving live, transitioning from the garage-twee/Vertebrats splendor of the
Nobody and Bomp compilations to a denser, more Huskery/guitar-heavy sound, but they had some trouble in the studio. Pat Dinizio came in to help out and did a good job of rescuing things (although his chain-smoking bugged me so much I couldn't bear the thought of signing
his band, the Smithereens!).
There was a national tour, fueled by shoplifted bologna and, um, VERY self-service gas... The record got taken on by Closer/Virgin Europe (with a slightly different cover), but unbeknownst to all of us, Richard Branson's mortal enemy Jimmy Blackwell had signed an L.A. band of the same name. Our guys had the legal high ground, but no money for lawyers, so Richard and Jimmy battled it out with
their lawyers, just to spite each other. Both bands gave up. This Boston lot split into the Voodoo Dolls [stuff on YouTube] and the Slaves.
